Molly Niesen honored for top paper at conference

Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Molly Niesen has been named as winner of the Brian Murphy Top Paper Award from the Union for Democratic Communications.  Dr. Niesen’s paper was entitled, “The Kidvid Crusade and the Eclipse of the Federal Trade Commission 1977-1980.”  She will receive the award at an awards banquet at the UDC conference in San Francisco on Nov. 1-2. She will also receive a cash prize.


Marita Gronnvoll named to editorial board

Assistant Professor of Communication Studies Marita Gronnvoll has been named to the editorial board for the Quarterly Journal of Speech.  It’s a national journal, published by the National Communication Association, which publishes articles and book reviews of interest to those who take a rhetorical perspective on communication.  Editorial board members review submissions and help select content for the journal.

  • October 19 – 21:  Age of Aquarius Swing Tournament in Muncie, IN
  • November 2 – 3:  L.E. Norton Invitational in Peoria
  • January 18 – 19:  Butler Bulldog Rumble in Indianapolis
  • January 25 – 26:  Northern Illinois Swing Tournament in DeKalb
  • February 22 – 23:  Bradley/ISU Swing Tournament in Peoria & Normal
  • February 28 – March 1:  IIFA State Tournament in DeKalb
  • March 8 – 9:  District V Qualifier / Last Chance Tournament in Normal

Elizabeth and Matt Gill win EIU Provost’s award for integrative learning

Communication Studies Professors Elizabeth and Matt Gill have been selected for the 2013 Eastern Illinois University Provost’s award for Integrative Learning.  The award recognizes departmental efforts to advance integrative learning within an undergraduate degree program.  Integrative learning encourages students to make connections among all aspects of their lives (academic, professional and personal) and apply learning gained in classes and other life experiences to new, complex situations.  Dr. Gill and Dr. Gill were honored for developing the Communication Studies Social Marketing Internship program.  The program gives Comm Studies majors an opportunity to create a public health campaign using social marketing tactics and provides important hands-on opportunities for the students.

Informational meetings on 2014 study abroad trip to Ireland

The Department of Communication Studies will host two informational meetings about next summer’s Study Abroad trip to Ireland.  Faculty members Jim Coleman and Dr. Angie Jacobs are leading the trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland in the Summer of 2014.  If you would like to know more about the trip, learn about scholarships and the courses available abroad, and how to budget for the costs, please come to one of two informational meetings:

  • Tuesday Oct 15th from 5:00-6:00pm in Coleman 1731
  • Wednesday, Oct. 16th from 12:00-1:00pm in Coleman 1771

A representative from the study abroad office will be there to discuss scholarships and planning for the trip.  They will also share all the important dates and deadlines for the trip and paperwork required.  If you are interested in studying abroad to Ireland, but are unable to attend the meeting, please contact Jim Coleman ( or Dr. Angie Jacobs (
